Upward Casting Copper Strip Billet Crystallizer and Casting Method

一种上引法铜带坯结晶器及铸造方法

(57) Abstract

An upward casting copper strip billet crystallizer and casting method. The crystallizer comprises an upper crystallizer section and a lower crystallizer section connected by fastening screws and sealing gaskets.

The lower crystallizer section incorporates a copper block substrate having S-type water channel grooves machined in the upper portion and interconnecting water passages in the middle-lower portion. The copper block substrate is connected at one end to a graphite mold via lower passages in the substrate.

The upper crystallizer section comprises a front plate and a rear plate welded from stainless steel, each provided with single-layer continuous S-type water channel grooves. Copper strip billets are positioned within the upper passages of the front and rear plates. The copper cover plate is provided at its top with two symmetrically arranged water inlet and outlet ports. The upper and lower crystallizer sections are interconnected by connecting water pipes.

The copper busbar produced by the crystallizer of this invention exhibits clear crystallization lines, with equiaxed grains as the predominant crystal structure, regular grain arrangement, and uniform grain size — resulting in more stable mechanical performance, superior machinability, and higher finished-product yield.

Key Technical Features
  • Dual-section crystallizer structure (upper stainless steel + lower copper block) with sealed, bolted connection
  • S-type water channel groove geometry in both upper and lower sections — optimised for uniform heat extraction
  • Single-layer continuous cooling circuit in the upper section; interconnecting passages in the lower copper block substrate
  • Graphite mold connected directly to the lower copper block via substrate passages
  • Symmetric dual water inlet/outlet ports on the copper cover plate
  • Produces copper strip billets with equiaxed grain structure, uniform grain size, and higher yield rate

Why an Invention Patent Matters

In China's patent system, invention patents (发明专利) represent the highest category of patent protection. Unlike utility model or design patents, an invention patent requires a full substantive examination — including novelty, inventiveness, and industrial applicability — before it is granted.

The crystallizer technology protected by this patent is the core of every casting line Mivo manufactures. The patented S-type water channel geometry and dual-section structure are what enable Mivo equipment to achieve 120 mm/min at 220×12 mm cross-section — approximately twice the casting speed of conventional crystallizer designs operating at the same specification.

Proprietary Know-How

Beyond the formal patent, Mivo's primary competitive advantage is accumulated process knowledge — the practical understanding of how to configure and operate upward continuous casting equipment across different copper grades, cross-sections, and capacity requirements. This knowledge is embedded in our equipment design, factory acceptance test procedures, and commissioning protocols.

IP & Licensing

Mivo's invention patent is filed in China. We do not license our core casting technology to third parties. Equipment purchased from Mivo includes the right to use the patented crystallizer design and associated casting method for the operational life of the equipment.
